Most artists would kill to have an album as good as Graduation, but as I said, I hold Kanye to a higher standard. Now, Graduation is by no means a bad album, quite the opposite. As rich as they are deep, each album is an experience that means something bigger. You can trace his life and his career through his music. When you compare the heart and earnest ambition on College Dropout to MBDTF fantasy you can see how far he's come and it's remarkable. I think what makes his music timeless is how he is able to put himself into the music. He's always changing and progressing and it comes from a place of artist curiosity. Most artists find a sound, stay with it, and ride it out to the end. I've spent 40-minute car trips listening to "Power" alone and still get goosebumps. I didn't like Yeezus, but I had to respect his willingness to take a real risk, something he's done with each and every album. The way the music reflects Kanye's turmoil and reckless opulence is astounding and the result is an energy that transcends time.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a masterpiece. People hate 808's & Heartbreak but I will defend that album to the death if you've ever been through a breakup you have to appreciate it. It's a feeling he's replicated time and time again. It's a feeling that comes from an artist pouring all of themselves into each and every single aspect of the album. There was something intangible yet undeniable and it shook my core. What amazed me most was not the way it sounded but the way it felt.

I remember where I was the first time I heard College Dropout and, though it was literally a decade ago, I still get the same feeling when I listen to it today. He's proven time and time again to be the gold standard of hip-hop, so anything less than groundbreaking simply isn't up to par. And that’s the real reason it’s his greatest achievement. But with great love comes great responsibility. Without it, there may have been no opportunities for Yeezus, Yeezy Season 1, or perhaps even Kim Kardashian West, whom the lyrics of “Lost in the World” were written for. But this period of reflection, where he was able to look back at his own career-triumphs, missteps and all-and forge a sound that was indeed dark and twisted, but most of all beautiful in its chaos, was completely necessary to his growth and his future success. Rather than a prescription for the future, MBDTF is a culmination of the past.

The difference is that for the first time in his career, he made music that looked backward instead of forward. The point is, Dark Fantasy’s influence was like that of any Kanye West album. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is incredible listening, but it is by no means a catchy pop album. Does “let’s have a toast for the douchebags” sound like “I’m sorry” to anyone? Even the album’s artwork, a distorted-reality nude painting by George Condo, was banned in Wal-Mart and had to be pixelated on iTunes. It’s got the grinding guitar riffs of “Gorgeous” and “Hell of a Life” and the schizophrenic horns, piano, and basically the whole assaultive spectacle of “All of the Lights.” Plus, it’s not even that apologetic. Nor could Dark Fantasy be considered easy listening. It sold fewer copies in its first week than 808s & Heartbreak, a record considered shocking, if not completely insane, when it first debuted. least challenging."īut critically acclaimed as it is, Dark Fantasy was by no means a commercial success. 'Power' was the least progressive song that I've ever had as a first single. "So many people rate Dark Fantasy as my best album, but Yeezus and 808s are so much stronger. But he also went on to say that the reflective nature of the album is exactly why he doesn't like the album much today. West himself admitted as much in October of this year: “It was kind of piecing together what people liked about me to make a bouquet of what people loved,” he said in an interview that aired on artist Nick Knight’s ShowStudio website. It’s almost as if West took every sound he had cultivated up until that point-the soul samples of College Dropout, the grand-scale and beautiful orchestration of Late Registration, the gloss of Graduation, and the auto-tuned melodies of 808s, and didn't so much as reduce them but compress them into one vision. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’s mouthful of a title perfectly suits the album’s maximalist, grandiose sound.
